"Could we shut down the government? Of course we could and that's because of border security, of which the wall (with Mexico) is a part," US President Donald Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on November 22, leading to the possibility that he would delay negotiations if Congress did not provide more money to build a border wall, according toReuters.
Trump also warned that he would close the entire border with Mexico for a period of time if he felt it was "going to get out of control or if the American people were starting to suffer." "That means Mexico will not be able to export cars to the United States," Trump stressed. Mexico exported 2.3 million cars to the United States in 2017.
The US president said he also gave the military the authority to use lethal force if necessary at the border with Mexico. "I have given my approval in the event that the military is forced to use lethal force. I hope they don't have to," Trump said.
