The two leaders discussed on November 21 "the need to maintain international pressure on North Korea to stop its nuclear weapons and missile programs," Yonhap quoted a White House announcement.

US President Donald Trump later said he had a "great phone call" that lasted nearly an hour and a half. "We spoke very strongly about North Korea and Ukraine," he said.

The United States and Russia are the two main players in the international campaign to bring North Korea back to the negotiating table on its weapons program. But the two countries are at odds over how best to influence North Korea. Washington mainly wants to impose tougher economic sanctions on Pyongyang.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin also discussed ways to bring peace to Syria and the joint fight against terrorism in the Middle East and Central Asia.
