In a phone call with Republican members on January 11, Mr. McCarthy also said that Mr. Trump was responsible for the unrest that caused the Capitol to be locked down during the confirmation of the electoral votes last week.

The White House has yet to comment on this.

The riot at the Capitol on January 6 left five people dead, including a police officer. It came after President Trump told a rally that he “will never concede” and continued to make unsubstantiated claims that the election was “stolen” from him and that he won “by a wide margin.”

Also in the call, House Republican Leader McCarthy told party members that he urged Trump to call Biden and congratulate the Democratic candidate on his victory.

While holding President Trump partly responsible for the riots, Mr. McCarthy, a staunch ally of the President, opposed impeachment proceedings against Mr. Trump, acknowledging that they have some important work to do in uniting the deeply divided Republican Party.

On January 11, the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives introduced a resolution to impeach President Trump on charges of inciting "insurrection".

"The president's threat to America is so urgent that we must act," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer later said that the House will meet at 9 a.m. on January 13 to consider articles of impeachment against President Trump./.
