(Baonghean.vn) - US President Donald Trump on July 11 accused NATO ally Germany of being beholden to Russia for buying energy from Moscow. This was the statement Trump made in sarcastic comments ahead of a summit of this military alliance in Brussels, Belgium.

“Germany is a prisoner of Russia,” Trump said at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, his first since arriving in the Belgian capital. “It was very inappropriate,” he said.

Trump went on to complain that the US was expected to “protect them from Russia,” despite Germany spending “billions of dollars” in energy payments to Moscow. “I think that’s something NATO has to look at,” Trump declared.

Stoltenberg responded to Trump's comments, asserting that while there may be many disagreements in the alliance, "we are stronger together than divided."

Trump responded by once again questioning how the NATO alliance could be stronger when Germany “is making Russia richer.”

“In my understanding, Germany is a prisoner of Russia,” Trump reiterated.

Trump's comments came before he arrived at NATO headquarters, where the US leader is expected to meet and take photos with leaders of alliance members.
