China: Journalist arrested for allegedly illegally holding state secrets

A journalist from the Southern Metropolis (China) newspaper has been arrested on charges of illegally possessing state secrets.

The recent arrest of Southern Metropolis journalist Liu Wei on charges of illegally possessing state secrets has raised concerns among Chinese journalists about their safety and professional responsibilities, according to the South China Morning Post.

The Southern Metropolis, headquartered in Guangdong Province, confirmed on the evening of October 16 that Mr. Liu, 37 years old, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, was arrested by police in Pingxiang City, Jiangxi Province, on October 8. Previously, Mr. Liu was said to have "disappeared" at Chengdu Airport in Sichuan Province.

The newspaper also contacted Jiangxi police on October 9 and asked for bail for Mr. Liu, but was rejected./.
