Will top universities lack candidates from the first round?
Although this year's benchmark scores have increased, with the new exam method, leaders of top universities are still confident in recruiting enough candidates...
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, the first round of admission scores of universities and colleges will be announced before 5:00 p.m. on August 1.
Currently, candidates are very interested in the admission scores for each major of the first round of universities (mostly top schools).
Evaluating this year’s benchmark scores, many university leaders believe that the benchmark scores of top universities will increase from 1 to 2.5 points; while those of middle-ranking universities will find it difficult to increase much. With such scores, will these schools be able to meet their enrollment quotas from the first round of admission or will they still be lacking like in 2016?
This year's admission method has limited virtual candidates.
Commenting on this issue, Associate Professor Dr. Do Van Dung, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, said that the 2016 admission method is that in the first round, candidates can register for a maximum of 2 universities. Each university has a maximum of 2 majors (groups of majors) in order of priority from 1 to 2.
In addition, the number of candidates registered for 2 universities, each university has 2 wishes, so many students with high scores registered for top universities only as their 2nd wish, and for their 1st wish, most of them registered for public security and military universities. These are schools where when entering, candidates do not have to pay tuition and are guaranteed to have a job after graduating from university.

Therefore, in 2016, there is still a possibility of many “fake” candidates, so universities will have difficulty screening out candidates who will not officially study at their school. This is one of the reasons why, for the first time in many years of enrollment, many top universities cannot recruit enough students in the first round of enrollment.
This year, although candidates can register unlimited wishes, they can only be admitted to one school that they registered for admission in order from highest to lowest.
A new point is that this year, the Ministry of Education and Training supports schools in screening virtual candidates using common software. It is expected that this year, the number of virtual candidates will only be about 10% of the number of candidates applying to schools. Therefore, it is likely that top universities will recruit enough candidates in the first round of admission.
Recruitment sources are still abundant.
This year, the whole country has 866,000 candidates registered for the National High School Exam, but only 75% of candidates use the results of this exam to apply for admission to universities and colleges.
Many people believe that nowadays, students no longer focus on getting into university at all costs, but instead focus on what they study to get a job after graduation. Therefore, it is not certain that universities will be able to recruit enough students in the first round of admissions.
However, Mr. Nguyen Phong Dien, Head of Training Department of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that the change in perception of candidates in choosing majors and universities could affect the university and college admissions this year. However, for top schools, the admission quota is still less than the number of registered candidates, so the situation that schools like Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hanoi Medical University lacked quotas right from the first admission round like in 2016 is unlikely to happen.
As expected, the top universities will announce the admission scores for each major as early as August 31. However, according to some education experts, to accurately assess the admissions of universities, we must wait until the end of the second round of admissions to know how the admissions of schools (including top universities) will be./.
