The People's Procuracy of Kien Hai district, Kien Giang has just served an indictment to prosecute defendant Son Van Dong, a police officer of An Son commune, for the crime of "violating citizens' rights to vote and run for election" under Article 126 of the Penal Code.

According to the indictment, at about 6:30 a.m. on May 22, Son Van Dong (born in 1968) committed fraud by using the voter cards of many people to vote on his behalf and tricking others into borrowing voter cards to vote on his behalf in order to remove the names of people from the People's Committee of An Son commune from the candidate list.

Through inspection, Mr. Dong illegally elected a total of 22 people.

At the investigation agency, Mr. Dong confessed that this wrongdoing was due to his frustration at the An Son Commune People's Committee's promise to repair roads and provide water in the area where he lived but did not do so.

According to Article 126 of the Penal Code, the act of "infringing upon citizens' rights to vote and run for election" can be punished with a maximum penalty of two years in prison.
