Ronaldo's controversial action. |
On Wednesday morning, June 22, Ronaldo was walking with his teammates near the hotel where the Portuguese team was stationed in Lyon when a reporter from Correio da Manha (CMTV) approached him. As soon as the reporter raised the microphone to interview him before the final match of the group stage, Ronaldo angrily snatched it away and threw it into the river nearby.
“We deserve respect, with at least an official apology from Ronaldo and the Portuguese Football Federation,” Carlos Rodrigues, CMTV's communications director, said.
“Cofina SA, the company that owns CMTV, will take action in the coming days to denounce Ronaldo’s unacceptable behavior and to ensure that similar incidents do not occur again in the future,” he added.
The Portuguese captain caused another controversy after the 3-3 draw with Hungary. He was voted “Player of the Match”, but refused to be interviewed at the official press conference held by the Organizing Committee.
Portugal failed to win a single game in the Euro 2016 group stage, collecting three points from three draws, and only qualified as one of the four best third-placed teams. They will face Croatia in the round of 16.
