International media coverage of the election in Vietnam

On May 22, major news agencies around the world simultaneously reported on the elections to the National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels in Vietnam, all of which shared the view that this is an important political event and demonstrates Vietnam's democracy.

China's Xinhua News Agency reported that on May 22, more than 69.265 million Vietnamese voters nationwide went to the polls to elect deputies to the 14th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2016-2021 term.

The election began at 7 a.m. (Vietnam time) at 91,476 polling stations nationwide.

According to Xinhua News Agency, 500 deputies to the 14th National Assembly of Vietnam will be elected from 870 candidates.

According to the list of candidates announced by the National Election Committee at the end of April, there are 339 female candidates, accounting for 38.97%, while there are 204 candidates from ethnic minorities, accounting for 23.45%.

The British news agency Reuters also said that about 69 million registered voters in Vietnam will vote to elect their representatives in the 500-member National Assembly.

Reuters quoted Mr. Nguyen Hanh Phuc, Chief of Office of Vietnam's National Election Council, affirming that all 870 candidates are equal, including candidates who are not party members and self-nominated candidates.

Mr. Phuc also affirmed that voters going to vote is their right and obligation to participate in building the country and society.

Voice of America (VOA) quoted domestic press sources as saying that this election is a "big festival" or "national festival" of Vietnam.

VOA quoted Mr. Nguyen Hanh Phuc as saying that more than 69 million Vietnamese voters nationwide will participate in the general election, divided into nearly 91,500 voting groups.

French news agency AFP reported that Vietnam has begun organizing elections to select delegates to the National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2016-2021 term./.
