(Baonghean.vn) - Dia once helped the Border Guard crack down on a heroin trafficking case, so when they learned that Dia was arrested for drug trafficking, many people were shocked.

On the morning of October 24, the provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of the case of illegal drug transportation against Xong No Dia (born in 1983), residing in Nam Can commune, Ky Son district. Dia's parents, sister, wife and youngest daughter traveled nearly 300 km to the city early to attend the trial. They did not enter the courtroom immediately but stood under the stairs leading to the courtroom, rushing forward, sobbing when they saw the officers escorting Xong No Dia into the courtroom. Dia stood in the dock, his eyes red.

Defendant Xong No Dia burst into tears while waiting for the panel of judges to deliberate.

Dia's family is very poor. They are so poor that to buy a motorbike, Dia and his wife had to borrow money everywhere but still could not afford it, even borrowing 20 million VND from the bank. The couple worked hard but only had enough to support 3 children, so the debt was still not paid off. Dia had once helped the Border Guard crack down on a heroin trafficking case, so when they learned that Dia was arrested for drug trafficking, many people were shocked.

According to the indictment, at around 4 p.m. on April 25, a man named Kien (unknown background) met Xong No Dia and asked him to bring 60 packages of heroin from Nam Can to Muong Xen town (Ky Son) for 5 million VND. Dia agreed. Holding the plastic bag Kien gave her, Dia took it home and hid it in the chicken coop. On the evening of April 25, Dia told his wife and children to go to work and then took his motorbike, carrying the drugs to Muong Xen town to deliver to Kien as agreed. When he arrived at Nong De village, Nam Can commune, he was discovered and arrested by the police force of Ky Son district along with 58 packages of heroin.

The conclusion of the Criminal Techniques Department of the Provincial Police shows that the samples seized from Xong No Dia sent for examination are synthetic drugs containing Methamphetamine. The total weight of the synthetic drugs that Dia transported was 1,090 grams.

At the trial, Xong No Dia confessed his crime and expressed his wish for the panel of judges to return the motorbike that was confiscated during his arrest. Dia's wife said that the motorbike was purchased for 47 million VND with borrowed money and the debt has not yet been paid off. This is the couple's joint property, so she hopes the panel of judges will return it so that the family has a means of transportation and business. The Nam Can Border Guard Station also submitted a request for the panel of judges to consider because Xong No Dia had helped the Border Guard Station solve the case.

Dia's parents could not hold back their tears when they heard the jury sentence their son to 16 years in prison.

The jury deliberated, Xong No Dia was brought to the row of seats reserved for defendants to wait. Dia's parents stood up to see their son more clearly. Seeing their son crying, they also lifted their shirts to wipe away their tears. The officers escorting him allowed his wife, son and Dia's mother to sit in the front row, about 2 meters away from Dia, to talk. Dia's mother could barely say anything, looked at her son and sobbed. It was unclear what Dia said, but Dia's wife and son were in tears. The older sister sitting next to him explained that Dia encouraged his wife to work hard to support the children, not to let them drop out of school and to take care of her disabled daughter in Dia's place.

The panel of judges determined that the provincial People's Procuracy's prosecution of Xong No Dia for the crime of illegally transporting narcotics was the right person and the right crime. The results of the drug content assessment for the 58 packages of pink pills that Dia transported showed that the amount was more than 150 grams, so it is necessary to apply Point e, Clause 3, Article 194, Penal Code 1999 to give a sentence appropriate to the nature and severity of the defendant's crime. However, it is necessary to consider mitigating circumstances such as honest confession, contribution to helping the border guards solve the case, limited legal awareness... to determine the sentence when sentencing Xong No Dia.

The People's Court sentenced Xong No Dia to 16 years in prison. The motorbike was used for criminal purposes and was confiscated for state funds.
