Taking your life, sentenced to 13 years in prison

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of March 21, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to try the murder case against Nguyen Quang Quyet (born in 1999, residing in Thai Son commune, Do Luong).

According to the indictment, at about 6:45 p.m. on26/9/2015, Quyet was standing and playing at the meeting hall of hamlet 7, Thai Son commune, when he met Le Khac Hieu (born in 1988) driving Le Van Dat (born in 2000) on a motorbike. Dat jumped down to hit Quyet, Hieu tried to stop him so Dat went home.

Quyet was angry because Dat beat him so he rode his motorbike to the grocery store to buy a sharp knife, put it in his pocket, then went home to park his motorbike and walked to the club to find Dat. A moment later, Dat appeared, the two argued. Dat punched Quyet, Quyet took the sharp knife from his pocket and stabbed Dat in the chest. Being stabbed, Dat ran away, after a while he fell down. At this time, Quyet caught up, stabbed Dat in the thigh, then took the knife and ran home.

Le Van Dat was taken to the emergency room but died later from a stab wound to the heart. Nguyen Quang Quyet returned home and told his parents about stabbing Dat. Quyet's parents took their son to the police to confess. At the time of the crime, Nguyen Quang Quyet was only 15 years old. Quyet was charged with "murder".

At the trial, Nguyen Quang Quyet admitted his crime, expressed remorse and apologized to the victim's family. The panel of judges determined that Nguyen Quang Quyet's crime was of a hooligan nature, and that he had committed the crime to the end. This is an aggravating circumstance according to the law. However, at the time of committing the crime, the defendant was a minor and had not yet fully developed his awareness. During the investigation and trial, he was always sincere and repentant, and the family had partially compensated the victim for the loss (VND 60 million), so he was entitled to mitigating circumstances.

Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced Nguyen Quang Quyet to 13 years in prison. The court also ordered Quyet's parents to compensate the victim 99 million VND for mental damage and funeral expenses. Minus the amount previously reimbursed, Quyet's parents must compensate Dat's parents 39 million VND.
