Long history
Since ancient times, the land of Tuong Duong has been the place where the ancient Vietnamese people lived. Through many historical events, ups and downs and changes in administrative boundaries and names, in the year Ky Suu 1469, King Le Thanh Tong issued an edict to re-define the map of the whole country, the name Tuong Duong was officially born.
Under King Le Thanh Tong, the administrative map was redrawn, dividing the territory into 12 administrative regions with the aim of strengthening State management and consolidating central power. In this reform, Nghe An was identified as one of the important administrative units. Nghe An administrative region has 9 prefectures, 25 districts, 2 states, including Tra Lan prefecture including 4 districts: Ky Son (including 30 caves), Hoi Ninh (including 5 caves), Tuong Duong (including 7 caves, 1 ward), Vinh Khang district (including 8 caves).

In the history of formation and development, Tuong Duong is located in an important strategic position, bordering Laos and becoming a fence for Dai Viet country. This land is both important in terms of national security and defense, and is also a cultural and commercial bridge between the ethnic groups in the mountains and the plains. Tuong Duong is also home to many ethnic groups such as Thai, Mong, Kho Mu, with a rich and diverse culture.
There are also many historical relics here, typically Cua Rao Temple (Xa Luong Commune), Ly Nhat Quang Temple (Tam Quang Commune), Tham Cong Cave (Tam Bong Commune). In particular, Van - Cua Rao Temple has long been a spiritual place for the ethnic minorities of Tuong Duong and visitors from near and far.



With the characteristic of many ethnic groups living together, Tuong Duong has a rich and diverse cultural life, imbued with regional identity. Among them, the Thai people with Cau Lam, Dieu Thap and charming, sexy costumes; the Mong people with colorful patterned costumes and xoe dance; the Kho Mu people with Tom singing attract listeners with its bustling melody. In addition, there are also unique cultural features of the Tay Poong and O Du people that are on the way to revival.

Today, Tuong Duong is the largest district in Nghe An province with 280,777 hectares, and has a 58km border with Laos. Despite the history of formation and development, with many changes in administrative boundaries, Tuong Duong people are always conscious of preserving and promoting their ethnic identity. The education sector has achieved many outstanding achievements. Over the past 5 consecutive years, the district's Education and Training sector has been classified as having excellently fulfilled its tasks. In 2024, 2 teachers were awarded the title of Excellent Teacher. In 2024, the rate of cultural families in Tuong Duong district will reach 86.3%; the rate of villages and hamlets meeting cultural standards will reach 93.1%. In 2024, the district also implemented many vocational training solutions and created jobs for workers. In coordination with units and businesses, 16 mobile job introduction sessions were organized in communes, attracting more than 3,500 workers to participate in job counseling and vocational training. Of which, 2,978 workers received vocational training; jobs were created for 3,449 workers. 290 workers went to work in Japan, Korea, etc.



Also in 2024, the poverty rate in Tuong Duong district decreased by 4%, bringing the poverty rate from 29.3% to 25.3%. National defense and security were maintained, social order and safety were ensured..
