During the National Assembly's group discussion on the socio-economic situation yesterday, May 22, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Senior Lieutenant General Le Chiem said that the security situation at sea in the first months of 2018 "has been relatively complicated".
According to him, with the support of Chinese specialized forces, Chinese fishermen fished deep in Vietnamese waters, only 40-50 nautical miles from Ly Son Island. "There were times when dozens of fishing boats, with the support of Chinese law enforcement forces, declared this sea area their country and chased away Vietnamese fishermen," said Mr. Le Chiem.
The Deputy Minister of Defense added that in April there were three incidents, with the peak involving up to several dozen Chinese fishing boats operating similarly; there were times when their fishing boats came only 30 nautical miles from the coast of Da Nang to fish.
Commenting that this is a tactic of invasion and propaganda to illegally enforce the nine-dash line, General Chiem said:“We have organized a campaign to resolutely chase the above mentioned ships out of the area.”

In addition, Mr. Chiem said that some countries in the ASEAN region that share a maritime border with Vietnam also had incidents related to the activities of vessels on both sides.
