Ukraine has filed a counterclaim against Russia's lawsuit in London's High Court.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry justified its objection to the debt by saying that the loan agreement signed between the Russian Federation and the Yanukovych government in December 2013 "is invalid and unenforceable" for several reasons.

Ukraine argued that the loan violated borrowing limits set by Ukrainian law at the time, and that the agreement appeared to have been “under duress, carried out by Russia against Ukraine throughout 2013 with the aim of preventing the country from signing an association agreement with the EU.”

In February, Russia filed a lawsuit in London's High Court to recover $3 billion in Ukrainian government bonds, which Russia bought in 2015 to pay the interest on the debt.
