According to the poll conducted from October 7-17, former Secretary of State Clinton received the support of 49% of young voters while Republican candidate Donald Trump received only 28%. The gap in support among young people for the two candidates in the 2016 White House race was even larger than their support for President Barack Obama and Republican candidate, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at the same time in 2012. According to analysts, young voters chose Clinton because they saw a big difference between the two candidates representing the two parties.
The national poll of voters of all ages also found Clinton leading Trump, though by a narrower margin than among younger voters. About 14 percent of respondents said they planned to vote for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and 5 percent for Green Party candidate Jill Stein, while 11 percent were undecided. However, more than 30 percent of those who planned to vote for Johnson said they might change their minds before Election Day.
The poll also found that 51% of respondents were concerned about the future of the United States, while only 14% of the 2,150 people surveyed said they believed the country was headed in the right direction. When asked about race relations under a new president, 62% said they believed they would worsen if Trump were elected, compared to 22% if Clinton were elected.
The feeling of fear is common among white voters, while 85% of black voters said they believe they are under “attack” in modern American society.
The poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
