(Baonghean.vn) -Tiananmen Square is a large square in Beijing, symbolizing the center of China and the northern gate of the Forbidden City. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Tiananmen Square was the imperial court's headquarters, there was no square, it was only formed after the Boxer Rebellion.

According to Chinese history, the Square was built in 1417, 880 m long from south to north and 500 m wide from east to west (area 440,000 m2).

In the past, the Square was called Thua Thien Mon. During the Qing Dynasty in 1651, the gate was renovated and renamed Thien An Mon. A highlight that attracts visitors is the huge portrait of Chairman Mao Zedong hanging above the north gate. In 1949, China was liberated, and the Square was expanded to its current size. In the middle of the Square are the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. There are two ancient, massive gates: the north is Thien An Mon and the south is Tien Mon. Along the west side of the Square is the Great Hall of the People, and on the east is the National Museum of Chinese History. Chang'an Avenue, used for parades, lies between Thien An Mon and the Square.
