Con Temple is one of the four most sacred temples in Nghe An. Since ancient times, the genealogy of Con Temple has clearly stated: "The nation of the South Sea, the great holy mother of the four supremely sacred deities".Photo of Con Temple at dawn (photo by Cao Dinh Dong) |

The main hall of the outer Con temple (facing the sea) has four words "Can Mon Linh Tu", meaning the sacred temple of Can Gate. The word Can can be read as the word Con. |
 |
The Outer Temple is located on the Lizard Mountain Range, right at the highest point of the mountain range. According to the imagination of the local people, the location of the temple is the head of a lizard, the body of which lies from the east to the north of the village, right next to the edge of the sea. This is a low mountain range, nearly 1km long with an altitude of over 100m above sea level. |
 |
According to legend, the Outer Temple was built around the 15th century (after the Inner Temple), and was restored and completed under the reign of Tu Duc (1848-1883), at the same time as the restoration of the Inner Temple. Emperor Binh is one of the characters in the legend of the “Four Holy Ladies” that is still circulating among the people of Phuong Can and the coastal strip of the Gulf of Tonkin. |

In the first year of Hong Duc (1470), King Le Thanh Tong, on his way to lead troops to pacify the south, also stopped at the Con Gate and entered the Temple to perform a peach praying ceremony. Thanks to the miraculous support of the Four Holy Mothers, the King defeated the enemy. After returning, the King granted money to build the temple and conferred the title "Dai Can Quoc Quoc Nam Hai Tu Vi Thanh Huong Thuong Thuong Dang Than Ngoc Thee", recognizing the merit of the Holy Mother in helping the country and the people. |
