Abu Ahmad, a Syrian who has been fighting against Bashar Al Assad since the first protests broke out in March 2011 and is now an IS jihadist. But Ahmad completely disagrees with the “extreme” behavior that IS has been perpetrating in Syria, especially against its own people. And this is also the reason why Ahmad testified to journalists.
The question is whether Ahmad’s testimony is reliable. To be sure, two journalists met him for more than 100 hours over 10 months and confirmed this through European jihadists who came to Syria. Abu Ahmad recounted everything he knew about the civil war, his role, the components… and the birth of IS.
It was April 2013, at that time, Ahmad was a fighting member in the ranks of “Majlis Shoura Al Mujahideen”. One morning, Ahmad was standing outside the organization’s headquarters and saw a black car approaching him. Ahmad’s comrades suggested checking the inside of the car. Ahmad saw nothing unusual except for four men, three of whom had guns in their hands. Ahmad only knew that one of the four was Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, who at that time was possibly the head of IS in Iraq and is now the most powerful figure in this terrorist organization.

For five consecutive days, Abu Ahmad saw the car with Baghdadi and his escorts every morning. Notably, Baghdadi was not the only representative of the jihadists present in Kafr Hamra.
All the leaders of the radical Islamic world, such as jihadist leaders in Egypt, Libya, Chechnya, and extremist groups such as Front Al-Nosra operating in Syria, were present.
In short, the world's most wanted men gathered in a room in Kafr Hamra for nearly a week. They sat on mattresses, enjoying chips, chicken and Pepsi.
During this time, Baghdadi tried to convince the remaining leaders to disband their Al-Qaeda-affiliated group and join the Islamic State in Iraq. Of course, when they joined, these people would still lead their group. He promised the remaining leaders he would 'create a real state'.
A debate has arisen. Many argue that Al Qaeda’s strength comes from its shadowy operations, and that creating a state with a defined territory would only make it easier to find and attack. In addition, none of the leaders of the extremist groups wanted to betray Ayman Al Zawahiri, the man designated to replace Osama Bin Laden as Al Qaeda’s leader.
However, Baghdadi eventually convinced the rest with his vision: 'establishing a state that will provide a common home for all Muslims in the world'.
It could attract thousands or even millions of jihadists who would otherwise struggle to join Al Qaeda because it operates in the shadows. Baghdadi also made sure that the idea of an Islamic state was suggested by Ayman Al Zawahiri himself.
At that time, no one could verify this information because Ayman Al Zawahiri was living in extremely secret bases. Therefore, the leaders of extremist groups and organizations declared their loyalty to Baghdadi but with one condition: what he said was correct.
On April 8, 2013, Baghdadi announced that his organization had expanded into Syria. Meanwhile, Al-Jolani, the leader of Front Al-Nosra, asked his fighters to wait for orders from Ayman Al Zawahiri, but received no response.
About a month later, 90% of the fighters pledged allegiance to IS and the rest were expelled. From here, the world saw the emergence of an extremist, notorious terrorist organization called IS and the story of IS's crimes then unfolded just as the media reported.
The US Foreign Policy website also confirmed that a secret meeting took place in Kafr Hamra, northern Syria in April 2013.
