NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia was inevitable because it was part of the Alliance's plan to expand its territory toward Russia, Zivadin Jovanovic, Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) in 1998-2000, told Sputnik.

"There is no possibility of avoiding NATO's invasion, because this operation has global geopolitical significance for the aggressors. They want to demonstrate their power regardless of international law and the United Nations, in order to receive open space to implement their military expansion strategy in southeastern Europe," the former Foreign Minister explained.

"On the other hand, they need to create a precedent to be able to globalize intervention outside the UN system without consulting the Security Council. It is an attempt to establish bases in the Balkans, to, as they say, correct the mistake of former US President and former Allied Commander-in-Chief Dwight Eisenhower during World War II and push their bases closer to Russia's western border," said Mr. Jovanovic.
