The US needs to do two things to improve relations with Russia, one of which is to instill fear, writes Foreign Policy magazine.

According to the author of the article, in order to contain Russia, the incoming US president will have to find a way to make Russia fear the US, so that Moscow stops "acting brazenly". However, at the same time, Washington should seek to win the trust of the Russian people, the newspaper noted.

The article writes that Russians mistakenly view the United States as a threat, so Washington needs not only to win the respect of President Putin, but also to win the trust of future generations of Russians, at least so that they do not perceive US policy as a threat.

The author expressed the view that the United States should resort to improving public diplomacy to honestly "express concerns about the human rights situation", but at the same time not show any intention to overthrow the Russian government.

However, according to the journalist, even if the US complies with these rules, improving relations between the two countries in the long term still requires great efforts.

In May, political scientist Ted Galen Carpenther wrote in the National Interest that Russia and the United States could reduce the level of tension in their bilateral relationship if they shared the world in spheres of influence and respected that.
