(Baonghean.vn) - Although production has been affected by prolonged heat, Nghe An still has a good summer-autumn crop this year. According to the assessment of the agricultural sector, this is primarily thanks to the advanced seed structure, good resistance and many localities have sought timely solutions to combat drought.

High productivity

By September 2, many localities in Nghe An had completed the summer-autumn rice harvest. The yield was much higher than previous years - that was the comment of many people in Dien Thanh commune (Dien Chau). With 4 sao of rice, Mrs. Tran Thi Sau's family expected to harvest nearly 1.3 tons of rice. "It's been a long time since we had a good summer-autumn crop like this year. Following the instructions of the commune and the seed supplier, I planted the seedlings after 9 days of incubation, the rice grew quickly and the plants were strong. There were almost no pests or diseases, so I didn't have to spend money on medicine.

"I heard that the agricultural service cooperative has prepared more than 300 million VND to buy pesticides but has hardly used them" - Mrs. Sau said excitedly. In just a few days, her family will finish harvesting 4 sao of rice, high yield, rice dried in the sun is immediately purchased by traders at 8,000 VND/kg.

Servicesummer fallThis year, Dien Chau district planted 8,900 hectares of rice. If last year the summer-autumn rice yield only reached an average of 47 quintals/ha, this year that number reached 53.5 quintals/ha. "This year Dien Chau planted late, the rice bloomed from July 20 to 25, 10 to 12 days later than last year, avoiding harsh weather, during the blooming period there was a southerly wind, high humidity so the rice dried well, giving a high yield", said Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Chau district.

Currently, Dien Chau has 14 rice production linkage fields with a total area of 710 hectares, with an average yield of 56 - 58 quintals/hectare and is purchased by enterprises at a price 1 - 1.2% higher than the market price, such as 70 hectares of NA6 rice in Dien Lien commune purchased at 8,000 VND/kg, NA9 rice at 9,500 VND/kg, Song Lam 9 rice at 8,500 - 9,000 VND/kg... "Up to now, we have harvested about 70% of the area, expected to be finished before September 5", Mr. Le The Hieu added.

Although only scattered harvests have been made, through inspection and evaluation, the summer-autumn rice yield of Thanh Chuong district will be much higher than last year's summer-autumn crop.

Mr. Le Dinh Thanh - Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee said: In the summer-autumn crop of 2019, Thanh Chuong only achieved a yield of over 30 quintals/ha, but this year, it is expected to reach 46 - 47 quintals/ha. Building and implementing a good crop calendar is one of the leading factors to achieve high productivity, thereby proactively planning, forecasting and preventing pests and diseases as well as having a reasonable irrigation regulation plan, making efforts to find solutions to combat drought.

In particular, Thanh Chuong prioritizes the main production of some rice varieties with advantages in yield, quality and especially the ability to withstand harsh weather. Only two typeslike NA6and Song Lam 9 has accounted for 3,000 hectares out of the total 5,500 hectares of summer-autumn rice in the district, with an average yield of 48 - 50 quintals/ha.

Effective intensive farming in drought

This year’s summer-autumn crop took place in extreme, harsh weather conditions, with severe heat in some places, especially severe over a wide area, lasting from May to July, causing some rice-growing areas that “rely” on water from dams and pumping stations to suffer from severe drought. However, in localities that use natural water sources such as districts in the Northern irrigation system, rice plants still grow stably, even due to the heat, there are few pests and diseases, high yields while investment costs are reduced.

Currently, in Dien Chau, Yen Thanh, Quynh Luu, farmers are concentrating on mass harvesting, in other areas such as Thanh Chuong, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen... people have also started to harvest sporadically.

According to statistics from the agricultural sector, by the end of August, the whole province had harvested over 10,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice out of a total of over 58,000 hectares, with an estimated yield of 44.11 quintals/ha, an estimated output of over 257,768 tons, some districts with high productivity such as Quynh Luu estimated at 55 quintals/ha, Dien Chau 53.5 quintals/ha...

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc - Head of the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, this year's summer-autumn rice yield is quite high despite production in prolonged hot conditions, first of all thanks to the advanced variety structure, good resistance, which has proven its advantages and suitability to Nghe An's conditions through many years of production such as Thien Uu 8, NA6, NA9, Song Lam 9, Huong Thuan 8, TBR 279...

Besides, irrigation work is very concerned, along with only putting into production areas with proactive water, all solutions to fight drought have been focused and made efforts by authorities at all levels from the province to the communes.

Although the heat lasted for a long time, unlike other years, this year Nghe An had less Lao wind than other years. During the rice differentiation stage, the air humidity was quite high and the air drought was less; some rice-growing areas encountered rain in early August but it was not significant, thanks to which the rice plants developed favorably and gave high yields. The heat also made it less likely for pests and diseases to arise and cause damage, and timely forecasting and effective prevention were carried out.
In particular, the increasingly high level of intensive farming among the people, good investment, the area of rice linked to concentrated production, and the increasing effective intensive farming models such as SRI and ICM have contributed significantly to improving the average productivity of the summer-autumn crop production in the whole province./.
