Why don't restaurants in Da Nang sell to Chinese people?

"I do business, I consider all customers who come to my shop as gods, I serve them wholeheartedly, but Chinese customers make things difficult for me, and bother other customers, I can't continue to serve them, so I had no choice but to post a notice that I don't serve Chinese customers."

The owner of the popular Ngoc Quy 2 restaurant on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Da Nang, explains why the restaurant posted a sign saying “No sales to Chinese” in both Vietnamese and Chinese.

Mr. TL, the owner of the above restaurant, said that the restaurant started posting the notice 2 weeks ago, stemming from a group of Chinese tourists coming to the restaurant to eat, including a dish that the customer ordered, ate almost all of it, then told the staff that they did not order this dish and refused to pay.

“They ordered two or three dishes, including a seafood rice dish for 70,000 VND. They ate almost all of it, and when the staff counted the bill, they said they didn’t like the seafood rice dish. They said “xi lo xi la” and other things, and then refused to pay. If they didn’t touch the rice dish and reported to the staff that they didn’t order the dish, the restaurant would admit that they misheard the customer’s order and not charge them. I was so upset that I posted a notice like that to avoid trouble when selling to those Chinese people,” the restaurant owner shared.

This is not the first or second time the restaurant has had trouble selling to Chinese customers. Mr. L., the restaurant owner, said: “Every time Chinese customers come in, they walk around the tables of customers eating in the restaurant, standing in groups looking at each other, making me feel very embarrassed for fear of offending them. Then one day, the waiter spoke English to them, but they refused, only speaking Chinese. I asked the waiter to speak Chinese, but they spoke English. Sometimes a group of Chinese customers staying in the surrounding hotels came to the restaurant to buy a bottle or two of water, but they asked and asked, haggled over the price, and then did not buy.

When paying, if they like, they pay in Vietnamese currency, sometimes they give in Chinese Yuan. If I refuse Chinese Yuan, they say this and that. But they don't know much about Vietnamese currency. They buy things, count my money, and when I give them change, they do it very accurately and very quickly. They make things difficult for me, and they bother other customers. I can't continue to serve them, so I have no choice but to post a notice that I don't serve Chinese customers.

The restaurant staff also shared that although it is a popular restaurant on the coastal road, many local customers and tourists from other countries also come to the restaurant to eat. Tourists from Japan, Korea, Westerners... are very civilized and polite. The waiters thank them for supporting the restaurant, they also politely thank the staff for serving them, if the sellers and buyers are satisfied, how can the restaurant react and not serve customers?

Since the restaurant posted a notice saying “no sales to Chinese”, the number of Chinese customers gradually decreased and then disappeared completely. However, the restaurant is not worried about losing revenue even though there are many Chinese tourists coming to Da Nang because, as the restaurant owner said, “we are all human beings, but if they pressure us, make things difficult for us, and especially disturb other customers who are dining in the restaurant, then that’s it”./.
