The world recorded 64,561 cases of monkeypox

On October 3, 2022, the Ministry of Health sent Urgent Document No. 5470/BYT-DP to the People's Committees of provinces and cities on strengthening the prevention of monkeypox.

In this urgent dispatch, the Ministry of Health stated that from May 2022 to present, the monkeypox epidemic has continuously increased in both the number of cases and the number of countries and territories recording cases.

On July 23, 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared this epidemic an international public health emergency.

As of September 26, 2022, the world recorded 64,561 cases of monkeypox in 105 countries around the world. In particular, the Western Pacific region has a number of countries recording cases including: Australia (132), Singapore (19), China (5), New Zealand (5), Japan (4), Philippines (4), South Korea (2), Guam (1), New Caledonia (1).

Strictly monitor at border gates, at medical facilities and rely on community events to detect monkeypox cases early.

Given the complicated developments of the epidemicmonkeypoxIn the world and in some Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, to proactively monitor, detect early cases of the disease, control the epidemic in a timely manner to prevent monkeypox outbreaks, overlapping epidemics, and minimize the number of cases and deaths, the Ministry of Health requests the People's Committees of provinces and cities to pay attention to directing the immediate implementation of a number of activities, specifically:

Direct departments, branches, agencies and units in the area to strictly implement the directions of the Government and the Prime Minister in Official Dispatch No. 680/CD-TTg dated August 1, 2022 of the Prime Minister on strengthening the prevention and control of monkeypox and the instructions of the Ministry of Health: monitoring and prevention of monkeypox; diagnosis, treatment and prevention of monkeypox in humans; prevention of monkeypox infection in medical examination and treatment facilities for monkeypox.

Prepare for local epidemic prevention and control work such as:

Strengthen strict disease surveillance at border gates, surveillance at medical facilities and event-based surveillance in the community to detect and prevent epidemics promptly;

Organize training for medical staff at all levels;

Ensure the admission, triage, and treatment of patients at medical examination and treatment facilities and infection prevention at testing and medical facilities;

Review and update response plans, scenarios, and drills to be ready to respond in case of an epidemic;

Prepare medicine, equipment, human resources, and funding.

What to do when a case of monkeypox is recorded?

The Ministry of Health also stated that when a case of the disease is recorded, it is necessary to urgently conduct a thorough investigation of all cases of contact with the positive case of monkeypox to determine the source of infection; promptly manage and handle the outbreak to prevent the disease from spreading widely in the community.

Organize isolation and treatment of positive cases to avoid deaths, and pay attention to avoid cross-infection and infection of medical staff during care and treatment.

The Ministry of Health also requested localities to promote transparent communication, in various forms, to inform people about disease prevention measures at border gates and communities about monkey pox according to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. At the same time, seriously implement information and reporting work according to regulations.

Previously, at the meeting of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health on the epidemic situation and key activities in the fourth quarter, which took place on the morning of October 3, Mr. Tang Chi Thuong - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that through control and screening, the locality discovered a case of monkeypox.
