Vietnam is one of 190 countries participating in the COVAX mechanism and is one of the countries on the list of countries receiving initial vaccine funding.

According to the announcement of COVAX, Vietnam will receiveCovid-19 vaccineIn this first phase, the expected number of vaccines (indicative doses) that Vietnam will receive is from 4,886,400 to 8,253,600 doses, of which 25 - 35% of the doses will be provided in the first quarter and 65 - 75% in the second quarter of 2021. The vaccine used in this phase is the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

The COVAX facility is a mechanism set up to ensure countries have equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines. In this mechanism, the World Health Organization (WHO) coordinates with GAVI, UNICEF, CEPI, vaccine manufacturers and partners to ensure countries have equitable and efficient access to vaccines. COVAX will ensure that participating countries have access to vaccines with a coverage of about 20% of the population in 2021.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Giang Huong, Director of the World Health Organization's Disease Control Programs, WHO Western Pacific Regional Coordinator for Covid-19 vaccines, WHO and its partners are currently working and coordinating closely with partners (UNICEF, GAVI, CEPI) and vaccine manufacturers to ensure timely supply to countries participating in the COVAX mechanism according to the plan and support countries in developing National Plans.Covid-19 vaccination supportand ensure that vaccination systems are ready to respond and operate to deploy vaccinations as vaccines are delivered to countries.

WHO is also working with countries to ensure that priority groups are vaccinated in the early stages, when vaccines are not yet available to the entire population. The priority groups are: health workers on the front lines of the fight against the pandemic, followed by vulnerable groups such as the elderly with underlying conditions, to protect these groups.

The WHO Office in Hanoi is currently working closely with and supporting the Ministry of Health in developing the National Plan for Covid-19 Vaccination to be submitted to the COVAX facility by February 9, 2021.
