It is known that Thailand spent 41 million USD to bring the biggest football festival on the planet to the Land of Golden Pagodas. Meanwhile, in Singapore, three companies Mediacorp, Singtel and StarHub joined forces to win the rights to broadcast the World Cup in this island nation for a total of about 18.8 million USD.

In a quick exchange with reporters this morning, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luong, Deputy General Director of VTV, said that VTV is currently still trying to negotiate with partners to get the World Cup copyright as soon as possible, everything has not been finalized yet.

It is known that VTV only encountered difficulties with the price issue, when the partner offered a price that was too high, nearly 11 million USD (234 billion VND). Meanwhile, except for the U23 Asia event, VTV unexpectedly received advertising to offset the cost, most of the recent major events, this station often had to suffer losses to serve the audience.

For the biggest event in June, with the role of a national television station, and above all serving a large number of football fans across the country, VTV will probably also try its best to own the television rights for the 2018 World Cup.

Vietnam is the only country in Southeast Asia that has not announced the television copyright for the 2018 World Cup.

Yesterday, Sky Net TV channel announced that it has acquired the copyright to broadcast the 2018 World Cup throughout Myanmar.

Thus, 10/11 Southeast Asian countries have announced ownership of the 2018 World Cup copyright. Vietnam is the only remaining country that is still in the process of negotiating the price.

Previously in April, 9/11 other countries in the region such as Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines and East Timor also announced that they owned the broadcasting rights to the most attractive tournament on the planet.

Notably, in Thailand and Singapore, faced with the very high price of World Cup television rights, companies joined forces to establish a unit to represent them in negotiating contracts, then share them with members.

World Cup television rights prices have skyrocketed in recent years.

In case of successfully owning the copyright of the 2018 World Cup, VTV will likely continue to broadcast for free to serve the people. Mr. Le Dinh Cuong, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Pay Television Association, said that FIFA requires all countries to broadcast the World Cup on broadcast stations to serve the public.

Therefore, even if VTV buys it, it will not have exclusive rights but will be forced to share in one of two ways: either other stations will broadcast it cleanly or broadcast the entire match and VTV's logo with advertisements before, during and after the match.
