Phase 2 evaluation results showed that 100% of vaccinated people developed immunity. The vaccine is effective against the UK variant.

Today, the research team will report the results of phase 2 clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine Nanocovax.

Phase 2 testing began on February 26 on 554 volunteers at the Military Medical Academy and Ben Luc District Medical Center, Long An, and ended on April 8.

Initially, the research team evaluated the vaccine as good as expected. All three dose levels were safe. 100% of vaccinated people developed immunity at different levels.

In particular, the virus neutralizing antibody index (ability to destroy SARS-CoV-2 virus) after 2 weeks of the second injection in the 25mcg dose group gave the highest result, with over 90%, the 2 dose groups of 50mcg and 75mcg gave slightly lower results.

In phase 2, the research team continued to confirm that the Nanocovax vaccine is effective against the UK variant. The South African variant has not been tested.

On April 27, the research team will report to the Ministry of Health's Biomedical Ethics Council to give the final conclusion and choose the optimal dose before moving on to phase 3 testing, which is expected to begin on May 5.

Phase 2 trial of Nanocovax vaccine gives very good results.

In phase 3, the Nanocovax vaccine will be tested on 10,000 - 15,000 people, including abroad such as India, Indonesia... At the Military Medical Academy, there are currently nearly 800 volunteers registered for phase 3 testing.

If all goes well, phase 3 testing will be completed by the end of September, at which point Vietnam will be able to produce the first Covid-19 vaccine.

In the near future, WHO will have official guidance on vaccine testing based on the principle of comparison with vaccines that have been officially licensed for use.

This will facilitate Vietnam's phase 3 vaccine trial process, especially when compared to the AstraZeneca vaccine being injected domestically.
