Vietnam conducts official activities as President of the United Nations Security Council
On April 1, Vietnam conducted official activities as President of the United Nations Security Council for April 2021.
This is the second and last time Vietnam assumes the role of Chair during its term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2020-2021 term.
Security CouncilOn the morning of April 1 (US time), the UNSC approved the April work program proposed by Vietnam, according to which the UNSC is expected to have 15 public meetings and 10 closed meetings to discuss international peace and security issues such as the situation in the Middle East, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, the Great Lakes region, Western Sahara, Colombia and Kosovo. The UNSC's affiliated agencies will also have many meetings during the month.
In particular, the UNSC also approved four open discussions chaired by Vietnam on overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines on April 8, sexual violence in armed conflicts on April 14, cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations on April 19, and protection of essential infrastructure on April 27.
On the same afternoon, in order to fulfill its commitment to transparency and promote the broad participation of UN member countries while performing its role as President of the UNSC, Vietnam introduced its working program to UN member countries outside the UNSC. The countries congratulated Vietnam on officially assuming the position of President of the UNSC in April 2021, and thanked Vietnam for its attention and efforts in contributing to the activities of the UNSC as well as seeking solutions to international peace and security issues.
UN member states also expressed their wish that the UNSC will soon hold in-person meetings to create opportunities for a large number of UN member states to participate in the discussions of the UNSC. They also welcomed the important discussion topics promoted by Vietnam during its presidency month, saying that these are diverse topics that put people at the center and demonstrate Vietnam's efforts in finding solutions to conflicts and promoting sustainable peace. Some countries wished Vietnam to continue to play an active role in the upcoming presidency month, similar to what it did in January 2020.
On the same afternoon, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, chaired an international press conference in his capacity as President of the UNSC, both in person and online. The press conference attracted a large number of reporters and representatives of news agencies and newspapers stationed at the UN, and 15 questions were raised about the work of the UNSC, Vietnam's priorities during its presidency month, and the situation of some hot spots in the regions./.
