| Raising buffalo for fattening as a commercial activity brings in over 600 million VND per year for Mr. Danh's family in Quynh Tam, Quynh Luu. |
From a barren, hilly area, Mr. Chu Van Danh in Quynh Tam commune (Quynh Luu district) boldly invested in building a buffalo fattening farm. This model generates an income of 500-600 million VND per year.
With readily available food sources and ample land, in 2015, Mr. Danh decided to invest in building a commercial buffalo farm. With 6 hectares of land, he hired machinery to level the ground and invested 500 million VND in building barns. For the first batch, he bought 50 buffaloes from local people, aged 2-3 years old, to raise. After two months of fattening, the herd grew healthy and quickly. When sold, he earned a profit of over 350 million VND. Recognizing the sustainable development and stable market for commercial buffalo farming, he increased the herd from 50 to 150 buffaloes per batch.
Mr. Danh shared: “Raising buffalo for fattening requires careful selection of breeding stock and proper care techniques. In addition, proactively securing a reserve of feed during the winter is crucial, along with ensuring hygiene in the barns, providing clean drinking water, and protecting the buffalo from the cold. Regular vaccination and deworming are also essential. Buffalo are best fattened at around 24 months old because at this age they grow rapidly, have strong teeth, and therefore have a high capacity for digestion, absorption of food, and meat accumulation…”

| Growing grass to fatten buffaloes is a practice adopted by many families, increasing their income. |
With their main food source being milkweed and finely ground cornmeal mixed together, the buffalo herd fattened up within just two months and were ready for export to China.
Each year, Mr. Danh's farm raises 5-6 batches of pigs, each batch consisting of 150 pigs, averaging 850-900 pigs per year. After 2 months of raising, each pig is priced at 43-45 million VND, yielding a profit of 5-7 million VND per pig after deducting expenses. Thus, his family earns a profit of 500-600 million VND per year.
To develop commercial buffalo farming, Mr. Danh's farm cultivates 2.5 hectares of milkweed; he also employs 4 workers with salaries of 3-4 million VND per month. Currently, many families are partnering with Mr. Danh to fatten buffaloes, increasing their family income. In Quynh Tam commune alone, there are currently over 1,200 buffaloes raised commercially.
