'With a score of 9-10, if you can get into the teaching profession, the school should stop recruiting!'

(Baonghean) - With only 9 points for college and 15.5 points for university, this is a record low admission score for this group of majors in recent years. Many opinions say that with low entrance scores, it will be difficult for Pedagogy to have good students. The quality of Pedagogy training will certainly be affected.

Statistics show that very few pedagogical schools or schools with pedagogical training majors have a stable admission score above 20 points, but most only recruit with a floor score of 15.5, or slightly higher. Specifically, like Vinh University, in addition to some majors such as English Pedagogy, Primary Education, Preschool Education and Physical Education with a benchmark score of 20 - 27 points, all pedagogical majors have a benchmark score equal to the floor score of 15.5 points.

Thai Nguyen University of Education has 6 majors with a minimum score of 15.5 points. 10 pedagogical majors of Hong Duc University (Thanh Hoa) have a score of 15.5. Hung Vuong University (Phu Tho), 8 out of 10 pedagogical majors have an admission score equal to the minimum score. Many other public universities such as Tay Nguyen University, An Giang University, Tan Trao University... also have very low admission scores for Pedagogical majors. In the local pedagogical colleges, many schools have admission scores of only 9 - 10.25 points for 3 subjects.

Many teachers and education experts are concerned that after 3 to 4 years, these candidates will graduate and become teachers, which will greatly affect the quality of general education. With such a low starting point, after the training process at universities and colleges, it will be very difficult to help them become good teachers with enough knowledge, skills, and methods to teach students.

Dr. Le Truong Tung - FPT University said: “Training quality depends on many factors, in which input is one of the most important factors. Normally, for some important fields, such as pedagogy, in principle, input should only select people with good academic performance or higher. If we take the floor score, which is 3 subjects equivalent to 15.5 points, as low as that, it is very difficult to expect that after 5 years we will have teachers of sufficient caliber to participate in training the young generation for the future, especially in the context of major changes in the current general education program”.

Teacher Tran Trung Hieu - Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Nghe An province, is concerned that in the context of the education sector being reformed, the quality of teachers is the decisive factor. Current teachers must be retrained to be able to teach the new general education program.

The admission scores of many candidates to the Pedagogy major this year are only average and below average, which will lead to poor teacher quality, difficulty in accessing new things, and risk of failure in educational reform: “With a score of 9-10, if you can get into Pedagogy, the school should stop recruiting students. Don't let achievements and the existence of a school ruin a generation that will become teachers in the future. Because in reality, many schools are currently experiencing a surplus of unqualified teachers, a lack of dedicated and experienced teachers. When the comprehensive general education program is implemented, it requires higher capacity, skills, knowledge, even multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge. With such scores, it is clearly not okay.”

The low admission scores for the Pedagogy major show that in reality, excellent students are not interested in the teaching profession, because the treatment of teachers in the locality is still low and many pedagogy graduates cannot find jobs.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam - Principal of Dinh Tien Hoang High School (Hanoi), the current selection method of meeting the quota without paying attention to the quality of teacher training schools proves that the schools are seriously lacking in recruitment resources.

Therefore, to attract good people to study pedagogy, we must solve the policy problem for teachers and merge pedagogical schools to improve the quality of training: “The Ministry of Education and Training must soon develop a policy for teachers. Teachers must have all three conditions, the first is training and development, but then they must be used and selected, the third is the treatment of teachers. The Ministry of Education and Training must change and must do it soon, otherwise in a few years the pedagogical schools will be dissolved. Second, pedagogical schools must also innovate training, like some other majors that have dual training; that is, good students of Mathematics and Physics can do other jobs in addition to their pedagogical degrees, so that when the pedagogical industry is not used, they can do other jobs.”

Thus, to have good teachers, we must first train good people to be teachers, and then continue to train good high school students. The input quality of teacher training colleges is low, making it difficult to have a team of good teachers with knowledge, skills, and methods to teach students. Many experts believe that teacher training colleges should not recruit students at all costs to meet the quota because it will lead to a decline in the quality of education and the long-term consequences for students will be very unpredictable./.
