Fire kills 6 in Taiwan: Elderly mother longs for her son

In recent days, many people have come to the house of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xuan (55 years old, residing in Hamlet 5, Nam Nghia Commune, Nam Dan District) to encourage her family and wait for news from Taiwan.

The fire in Taiwan left 5 people injured and 6 dead. Among the victims, Nguyen Huu Hai (27 years old) is being treated, the son of Ms. Xuan and Phung Trong Tuan (31 years old, residing in Ha Tinh), one of the deceased victims is Ms. Xuan's son-in-law.

In addition, Ms. Xuan's children working in Taiwan include: Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong (29 years old, Mr. Tuan's wife), Nguyen Huu Hung (26 years old), Phan Le Thanh (29 years old, Ms. Xuan's nephew) and Mr. Hai's wife.

“Hai just got married last year, they both went to work and fell in love there, now she is 4 months pregnant. Luckily Hai did not die, but we don’t know when he will recover,” said Ms. Xuan.

6 years ago, due to family difficulties, Nguyen Huu Hai returned home and asked his mother to let him go to Taiwan to work. Because she loved her son, Mrs. Xuan ran around borrowing money everywhere, even mortgaging her assets to the bank to have enough 150 million for her son to go.

As soon as he paid off his debt, Nguyen Huu Hung also asked to come over to work with him. Therefore, Mrs. Xuan continued to borrow money again. Seeing that business was good here, the two brothers invited their brother-in-law and sister to come over as well.

Huong and her husband had two young children, the older one was 7 years old and the younger one was 2 years old. Huong let her husband go first, and after a while she left her children with her grandparents in Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh province to look after them and then went to be with her husband. However, after only a few days of going there, before she could meet her husband, she received the bad news.

“Hung called to say that when the fire broke out, he was working the night shift, and 11 people were sleeping in the dormitory. Because the fire started at dawn, the flames were already high when it was discovered. Hai and a friend risked their lives and rushed into the fire, escaping through the main door, while three others tried to jump through the window. The others did not have time to escape, so…”, Ms. Xuan choked up.

After jumping from the second floor, the victims were all injured, scratched, burned, or suffocated. All were taken to Truong Canh Hospital (Tao Yuan) for treatment. Up to now, the victims with minor injuries have been discharged, but Nguyen Huu Hai, who was seriously injured and suffocated, is being treated in the intensive care unit.

The bodies of the six deceased workers have been taken to Taoyuan Funeral Home, awaiting family members to come for DNA testing to determine their identities.

As reported, at 2:00 a.m. on December 14, in Taoyuan City (Taipei - Taiwan), a fire broke out, killing 6 Vietnamese people, including 2 workers from Ha Tinh.
