According to RT, more than 8,000 documents have been published as part of “year zero”, the first part of WikiLeaks' series of CIA revelations called “Vault 7”.
In a statement, WikiLeaks said “year zero” had publicly disclosed details of the CIA’s “global covert hacking program,” which included exploiting products from major companies such as Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android, Microsoft’s Windows, and even Samsung TVs.
The documents were obtained from the CIA's Cyber Intelligence Center in Langley, Virginia. WikiLeaks said it wanted to start a public debate about "the security, creation, use, proliferation and control of cyber weapons."
Wikileaks claims the documents will answer policy questions that need to be discussed publicly, including “whether the CIA’s ability to penetrate beyond its mandated powers and public oversight.” The documents were “recently collected and cover 2016,” roughly from 2013-2016.
Additionally, WikiLeaks asserted that it was not releasing the entire document and was only verifying it, asking journalists to get involved.
In its “year zero” analysis, WikiLeaks details “Weeping Angel,” a wiretapping technique that turns smart TVs into microphones. Working with the British domestic intelligence agency MI5, the CIA hacked Samsung TVs with “Weeping Angel,” putting them into “Fake-Off” mode, recording conversations while the devices appeared to be turned off.
The move by Wikileaks comes after their scheduled press conference was hacked.
