A spokesman for the French Interior Ministry told the BBC that the driver was 32 years old and a French citizen.

Although his car crashes were believed to be intentional, they were not considered a terrorist attack.

The driver had attempted suicide a few days ago. It appears he had no previous criminal record, the Interior Ministry spokesman added.

According to RTL radio, he told police there were weapons in the car.

The deceased was an 8-year-old girl, reported to be 13. Her brother was also among the injured, police sources said.

The incident occurred in Sept-Sorts, a small village 55km east of Paris at 8:30 p.m. on August 14 (local time).
