Breaking the 14-year-old SEA Games record in the men's 400m individual medley on the evening of August 25, Kim Son still retains the innocence of a teenager.

"I can't believe I can swim so well. After swimming, I was so tired, my limbs were stiff," Nguyen Huu Kim Son shared withVnExpressafterfinished first with a time of 4 minutes 22 seconds 12."But when I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that I had won first place and broken the record, I felt as strong as if I had never swum before."

Kim Son swam in lane number 5. The first two laps of the pool, the 15-year-old athlete was only fourth, but in the next two laps, he accelerated to reach the finish line first. Kim Son's achievement wasrecord breakingRatapong Sirisanont of Thailand set in Vietnam in 2003 (4 minutes 23 seconds 20)

“After receiving the results, I was still worried. I had to wait to see if the referee announced any violations. It would be a waste to break a record but violate the rules,” Kim Son added.

While waiting to receive his medal, Kim Son was greeted by his opponents who came to shake his hand, congratulate him, and express their admiration.“I was a bit nervous during the competition today. My strategy was to focus on the backstroke and breaststroke. But after finishing these two parts, I realized that I was still behind my opponent, so I was a bit confused. I didn’t expect that I would successfully break through in the second half,” said the new talent of Vietnamese swimming.
