Having never flown before, the 11-year-old girl decided to “test her fate” and went to Vnukovo airport alone, trying to board a flight to St. Petersburg on April 25 without any documents.
The girl said she had easily slipped through airport security checks by blending in with the crowd. In fact, security officers at Vnukovo Airport did not check her papers as she squeezed into a large family. Employees of Rossiya Airlines, which operated the flight to St. Petersburg, did not notice or pay attention to the fact that she was traveling alone.
The incident has raised concerns about the level of security at Russian airports and domestic flights. According to RT, officials from both the airline and Vnukovo airport are now facing an investigation into the security breach.
As for the 11-year-old girl, after the plane landed at the airport in St. Petersburg, although she tried to follow the family she had followed at Vnukovo airport, she ended up getting lost and stuck in the airport waiting room until her relatives discovered she was missing after school. And then they learned that she was all the way at... St. Petersburg's Pulkovo airport after contacting her by phone.
The girl’s relatives had to ask airport staff to find her and transfer her to a child care organization, which arranged for her to be returned to her family in Moscow. Her mother told the media that she planned to sue and demand compensation from both Vnukovo airport authorities and Rossiya Airlines.
