Fast food is becoming more popular around the world. With its high content of red meat, sugar and fat, it is one of the causes of obesity. |
The study results were based on an analysis of human body mass from 1975 to 2015 in 200 countries. Accordingly, over the past 4 decades, the number of people with obesity worldwide has increased more than 3 times in men and 2 times in women.
Specifically, in 1975, only 2.6% of the world's population was obese, but in 2014, that number had increased to 8.9%.
High-income countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the US have the highest obesity rates in the world, with more than 25% of the population. The Middle East and North Africa are second with more than 26 million obese people, or 13.9% of the population.
Burundi and Timor-Leste have the lowest male obesity rates in the world, at less than 1%. Meanwhile, women in Timor-Leste, Japan, Vietnam, North Korea, Cambodia, Laos and Bangladesh all have obesity rates below 5%. In contrast, rates in some Caribbean and Middle Eastern countries are as high as 40-50%.
In 1975, China ranked 60th and 41st in the world for obesity among men and women, but by 2014, it had risen to second place for both sexes.
The United States, a country famous for its fast food, has recorded obesity rates of 25% and 20% for men and women, respectively. By 2025, a study by The Lancet journal estimates that 43% of women and 45% of men in the United States will be obese.
