The Ishigaki City Government Office in Japan said that two Osprey heavy-lift multi-purpose transport helicopters of the US Marine Corps made an emergency landing at Ishigaki Airport in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, on the afternoon of September 29.

Speaking to reporters, Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga called the incident "truly outrageous."

The incident occurred in the context that Japan has asked the US to limit Osprey flights in the country, after one of these aircraft crashed off the coast of Australia on August 5.

The Ospreys are deployed at the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Okinawa Prefecture. Local residents have opposed the aircraft's operation due to concerns about fatal accidents involving the Ospreys overseas.

In March 2017, the US Department of Defense postponed the deployment of the Air Force's CV-22 Osprey transport aircraft at Yokota Base in Tokyo until September 2020, instead of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 as originally planned, but did not give a reason.

The MV-22 Osprey is designed to take off vertically like a helicopter and fly like a jet, so it is likened to an "Osprey"./.
