Five Nepal national football team players have been charged with treason for their long-term involvement in match-fixing and match-fixing of Nepal's matches.

The trial of five Nepalese players, including former captain Sagar Thapa and goalkeeper Ritesh Thapa, began yesterday (November 9). The five players are suspected of fixing scores of many Nepalese matches, spanning eight years, including matches in 2011, when Nepal was playing in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The case was investigated in secret, but it was not until last October that police were able to arrest the five players, after detectives discovered a huge sum of money in their bank accounts, originating from match-fixing bosses in Southeast Asia.

The prosecutor asked the court to sentence all five players to life in prison.

The trial will continue today (November 10). The judge will decide whether the five players should continue to be detained or be released on bail./.
