Democratic electors, mostly supporters of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in Washington and Colorado, are lobbying Republican electors in other states to vote for a candidate other than Mr. Trump. Their goal is to convince at least 37 Republican electors to withdraw their votes for Mr. Trump, so that he does not have the minimum 270 electoral votes.
However, these Democratic electors also admit that they are unlikely to achieve their goal, and even if they convince at least 37 Republican electors to vote for another candidate, the final decision will depend on the House of Representatives, a House controlled by the Republican Party at that time will likely still choose Mr. Trump.
Anticipating this, the electors still hope that their campaign can at least erode faith in the outdated and controversial electoral college system.
It's unclear how many electors will change their votes, but political science expert George Edwards III toldPoliticothat: “If 8 or 10 electors withdraw their votes for Mr. Trump to vote for someone else, it will attract attention.”
According to site statisticsFairvote.org,In the past 228 years of the Electoral College, 157 electors have changed their votes at the last minute.
According to the electoral college system, a candidate will become president if he wins at least 270 out of 538 electoral votes. Meanwhile, according to the rules in most states, a candidate who wins the majority of popular votes cast by voters in that state will win all of the electoral votes in that state. This is also the reason why, although Mr. Trump won nearly 2 million fewer popular votes than his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, he won 290 electoral votes and was elected president.
Along with the campaign of the 6 electors mentioned above, the US media reported that since Mr. Trump won the election on November 8, many electors have received a series of emails threatening or pressuring them not to vote for Mr. Trump. Meanwhile, millions of American voters have signed an online petition calling on electors to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
The Electoral College of the states is expected to meet on December 19 to officially vote to choose the next president of the United States.
