Murder from bird shooting competition
Aiming at the same target, Hieu pulled the trigger first, causing the bird to fly away. Quy was angry and invited his brother to beat him up, causing the victim to die 3 years later.
The verdict dated May 29 of the People's Court of Loc Ha district (Ha Tinh) determined that at around 7:00 a.m. on May 1, 2014, Nguyen Dinh Quy (32 years old, residing in Thinh Loc commune) brought an air gun to shoot birds in the tree field in the area. There, Quy met Ho Van Hieu, who was also holding a gun to hunt birds.
Quy and Hieu both aimed at a bird that was perched a few dozen meters away. Hieu pulled the trigger first but missed, causing the bird to fly away. The two then argued, and Hieu raised his gun and threatened to shoot Quy.

Frustrated, Quy called his brother Vo Hong Bich (42 years old) to come and take revenge. When Hieu left, Quy and Bich chased after him. They stopped the car and exchanged words. Hieu held an air gun and threatened to shoot Bich, but Quy ran up and grabbed the gun, holding a stick and the butt of the gun and beat him repeatedly.
When stopped by passersby, the Quy brothers stopped and took Mr. Hieu to the commune health station for first aid.
After a period of treatment at hospitals in Nghe An and Hanoi, on January 20, 2017, Mr. Hieu died. His family filed a complaint with the Loc Ha District Police, denouncing the actions of Quy and Bich.
The forensic conclusion of the Institute of Criminal Science showed that Mr. Hieu suffered multiple injuries due to being attacked with a gun butt and a casuarina wooden stick, causing 24% damage to his health. This was the reason why his health deteriorated over a long period of time, leading to a stroke and death.
The People's Court sentenced Quy 2 to 6 years and 2 months in prison, and Bich to 2 years for intentionally causing injury, and ordered to compensate the victim's family more than 90 million VND.
