Inspired by an accident caused by a language barrier, the shirt is part of a creative product line by the Iconspeak team. “We came up with the idea in 2013, when we were riding our motorbikes into a remote village in Vietnam. However, our motorbikes broke down, and we couldn’t find anyone who spoke English or French to help us,” said George Horn, the company’s founder.
Seeing that foreign tourists were using paper drawings to communicate with locals and that this was effective, George Horn’s team put those drawings on T-shirts that they already wore. “It was a long process,” Horn said. “We started with a list of symbols, and then narrowed it down to about 40. We also had to pay attention to religious details, as some symbols could be offensive in certain countries.”
