The economic sanctions imposed by the US administration are not effective in the long term, the German newspaper Handelsblatt writes.

The author of the article notes that in the first year of President Trump's administration alone, the US imposed restrictions on more than 700 people, government entities and companies. As a result, countries such as Russia, Venezuela and Iran are denied access to the US market, while the US is using its dominant position in its national currency.
However, in the long run, such US actions will lead to the opposite result. As Handelsblatt explains, the Iranian government benefits more from such conflicts with the US, a similar situation is developing in Russia, Venezuela, and Turkish President Erdogan does not lose popularity among the people.
Sanctions are designed to influence the leadership of certain countries, forcing their governments to be more persistent in maintaining their current course, while giving them the opportunity to portray themselves as victims of US aggression.
In a similar situation, US opponents could hardly find a more favorable enemy than Trump, the newspaper concluded.
