Arrest of Nigerian subject leading a ring of scammers of Vietnamese women via Facebook

Thanh Hoa Provincial Police said they have temporarily detained a foreigner for fraud and property appropriation worth nearly VND900 million (according to Article 174 of the 2015 Penal Code). This decision by the police agency has been approved by the People's Procuracy at the same level.

Previously, the Criminal Police Department of Thanh Hoa Province Police received a report from Ms. HTH (born in 1980), in Trung Son Ward, Sam Son City (Thanh Hoa Province) about being scammed out of nearly 900 million VND by a foreigner she met through social networks.

After receiving the victim's report, the High-Tech Crime Prevention Police Team (Criminal Police Department) opened a case to investigate and clarify.

Through verification and synchronous application of professional measures, by the end of June 2020, the Criminal Police force of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police discovered that Ajearo Chuckwugekwu Godwin (born in 1986), a Nigerian national, was the main culprit in the fraud case of nearly 900 million VND of Ms. HTH and was also the leader of a transnational fraud ring via the internet.

At the police station, the subject Ajearo Chuckwugekwu Godwin confessed: Knowing that Vietnamese women love to receive gifts from abroad, Ajearo Chuckwugekwu Godwin went to Vietnam, colluded with some subjects in Ho Chi Minh City and went on Facebook with the nickname Johnson Alex to get acquainted with some Vietnamese women.

After getting acquainted, they chatted and promised to send gifts of gold, silver, jewelry and foreign currency to these women through airline staff on the condition that the recipients had to send a fee through the bank account they introduced. Using this trick, Ajearo Chuckwugekwu Godwin tricked Ms. HTH into taking nearly 900 million VND.

Currently, the Criminal Police Department of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police is continuing to investigate and clarify the case.
