Emergency arrest of Customs officer suspected of receiving nearly 1 billion in 'envelope' money
The police seized more than 60 envelopes containing nearly 1 billion VND that were "submitted" by businesses during the 5 days that Mr. Duy went to China.
On the afternoon of January 9, Mr. Hoang Viet Cuong, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Customs, said: The Monetary Security Department - Ministry of Public Security has urgently arrested Mr. Nguyen Tuong Duy (48 years old), an officer of the Control Team of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department to investigate and clarify the act of abusing his position and power while performing official duties.
According to initial information, on December 29, 2015, when Mr. Duy had just completed immigration procedures at Tan Son Nhat Airport after a trip to China with two girls, the Monetary Security Department (A84) issued an emergency arrest warrant.
Afterwards, the police took Mr. Duy to his house in District 1, where he lives with his family, to conduct an emergency search in accordance with the law.

Here, the security agency seized more than 60 envelopes containing a total of nearly 1 billion VND. The above amount of money was seized to serve the investigation of Mr. Duy's suspicion that he forced businesses with goods imported and exported through ports in Ho Chi Minh City to pay for customs clearance.
According to some victims, the envelopes containing nearly 1 billion VND were "submitted" by businesses during the 5 days Mr. Duy went to China.
Mr. Duy imposed and forced businesses to pay new money for goods to clear customs. From the source of the complaint, the security agency determined that Mr. Duy forced more than 200 people to pay tribute.
