8 year old boy brutally beaten by stepfather

On the afternoon of November 3, Tra Cu District Police, Tra Vinh Province, said they were consolidating the case file to prosecute Mr. Thach So Khum (residing in Soc Cha B, Thanh Son Commune, Tra Cu District) for his involvement in the brutal beating of Nhan Huu P. (8 years old, residing at the same address).

According to initial information, P. is currently a third grade student at Tra Cu B town primary school. On the afternoon of October 31, when P. arrived at class, his classmates discovered that he had many wounds all over his body. The incident was then reported to the homeroom teacher and the school board, and also reported to the police.

Ms. Duong Kim Dinh - principal of Tra Cu B town primary school said that after discovering the case of child P. covered in injuries, the school detained the child and recorded the incident to report to the police. After working with child P.'s mother, the school learned that the child was brutally beaten by his stepfather with a stick.

"P. is a good student, he is also well-behaved in class. The school does not yet know why he was beaten so brutally, the police are currently investigating," said Ms. Dinh.

Through observing the images provided by the school, P.'s body was beaten and had many torn skin places. More tragically, P.'s back was hit very hard by a hard object, leaving bloody, bruised injuries about 3 fingers wide.

According to research, P. is the biological child of Mr. Nhan Van B. and Mrs. Thach Thi So Ph.

Mr. B. is currently the Vice Chairman of a commune in Tra Cu district, and Ms. Ph. is currently the vice principal of a kindergarten in Thanh Son commune.

Mr. B. and his wife divorced in 2010. The court assigned P. to Mrs. Ph. to raise. Two years ago, Mrs. Ph. remarried Mr. Khum and moved to live together in Thanh Son commune.

Speaking to reporters on the afternoon of November 3, Ms. Ph. admitted that Mr. Khum had beaten P. with a bamboo stick at noon on October 31. P. was then hospitalized for treatment and discharged home on the morning of November 3. He is currently still living with Mr. Khum.

When we asked to meet P. to ask questions and to discuss P.'s safety while continuing to live with Mr. Khum, Ms. Ph. refused and closed the door to prevent contact. Ms. Ph. also said that Mr. Khum beat her in a fit of anger.

According to the reporter's source, after P. was taken for injury assessment on November 2, the results were available by noon today. Accordingly, P. was beaten with a hard object, causing injuries all over his body with a disability rate of 16%.

The case is still being investigated by Tra Cu District Police.
