Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital performs surgery to save newborn baby with critical brain hemorrhage
(Baonghean.vn) - The child had a critical brain hemorrhage, and the risk of death could come at any time. However, the patient's parents asked to take their child home because their family situation was extremely difficult. Doctors had to convince and support the family to save the child's life.
June 14,Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospitalreceived baby Xong Ba Anh (26 days old, weighing 2500g, from Pha Ta village, Dooc May commune, Ky Son district). Baby Xong Ba Anh was admitted to the hospital in a very weak condition, with pale skin and vomiting.
Child patient Xong Ba Anh was transferred to the Department of Surgical Resuscitation for monitoring, sedation, endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation to control breathing, invasive arterial blood pressure monitoring for continuous hemodynamic monitoring, central venous catheter placement for emergency drug infusion; and emergency testing and diagnostic imaging were also indicated.

CT scan images show: The left parietal-occipital lobe brain parenchyma has a hemorrhage measuring 35x34x42mm; cerebral edema causes compression and collapse of the left lateral ventricle, shifting the midline to the right by 11mm; subdural hematoma. The patient has increased intracranial pressure.
Assessing the condition of the child's cerebral blood vessels, it is possible that they may rupture, causing bleeding in the brain and meninges, which can be fatal for the newborn. The Board of Directors of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the Department of Surgical Resuscitation, the Department of Trauma, Anesthesia and related functional departments consulted and reached a consensus: The risk of death during and after surgery for the child is very high, however, the most optimal solution is still to transfer to emergency brain surgery. The hospital doctors are determined to save the child by all means.
However, when the doctor explained to the family that Xong Ba Anh's condition required emergency surgery, the parents shook their heads in fear, refused, and insisted on taking their child home. The parents explained: "Our family is one of the poorest in the village. Recently, the family had to borrow money to treat the child's grandfather who had just died of cancer. This time when the child went to the hospital, the family continued to borrow some money. Up to now (June 16), the money has been exhausted. The family has no more money for living expenses. At home, there are 2 small children who have to be sent to the neighbors, with no one to take care of them."

Not willing to let Xong Ba Anh lose his chance to live because of his family's circumstances, the doctors tried to convince and explain to his parents that even though the patient's condition was "near-death", there was still a chance to save his life and they could not give up... if they did not operate, the child would certainly die.
Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospitalhas come up with a plan to support the patient's family and save the baby: Verify the baby's family's circumstances; call on more benefactors to join hands with the hospital to support all treatment and surgery costs for the baby; assign the Quality Management and Social Work Department to connect and request the executive committee and people of Pha Ta village to support the care of the 2 babies at home.
With the companionship, sharing, and persuasion of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Mr. Xong Ba Mua - the father of baby Xong Ba Anh placed his trust in the hospital's doctors, signed a confirmation of the surgery commitment... Immediately after that, at 12 noon on June 16, baby Xong Ba Anh underwent surgery.

Specialist Doctor Phan Van Huy - Deputy Head of the Trauma Department, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital shared: The decision to perform surgery was a big challenge for the team, because the baby was too young, the risk of the worst situation could develop at any time. But we had no other choice, everyone was determined to save the patient's life."
With the cooperation of 3 departments: Trauma, Anesthesia, and Surgical Resuscitation, after 3 hours of emergency surgery, the patient's brain hemorrhage was controlled... After the surgery, baby Xong Ba Anh was put on a ventilator, closely monitored, continuously controlled vital functions, and actively resuscitated. The baby's health condition improved, overcoming the critical stage and gradually recovering.
On June 30, baby Xong Ba Anh was able to return home, amid the joy of his family and the villagers of Pha Ta. In the coming time, the baby will be re-examined. Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital will continue to accompany and share with the family throughout the baby's treatment process.
