According to the prosecutor, the two suspects arrested include one who is the mastermind of the attacks, who participated in the activities of a terrorist group as a leader and recruited other terrorists. The other is also a member of this terrorist group and is considered the author or co-author of the plot to attack the capital Brussels.

The arrests were made on 27 and 28 December following a series of searches in the Flemish Brabant, Liege and Brussels regions on the “order of a judge investigating terrorism”. A total of six people were arrested in the raids, but four others have since been released, apart from the two suspects.

Although no weapons or explosives were found at the homes of the two suspects, investigators did find “computer equipment and military training gear in the style of the Islamic State.” In addition, prosecutors also determined that the search warrant was not related to the series of attacks in Paris on November 13.

At 7pm on December 28, Belgian police also arrested two particularly dangerous suspects in the capital Brussels. Currently, Belgian authorities have not confirmed whether there is any connection between the two incidents.
