Russian "sea of people" bid farewell to heroic Su-25 pilot
Tens of thousands of Russians attended the funeral and farewell ceremony for pilot - Hero of Russia Roman Filipov, who fought bravely and died after his Su-25 plane was shot down by Syrian rebels.
Tens of thousands of Russians attended the funeral of Major Roman Filipov on February 8. The Su-25 he was piloting was shot down by Syrian rebels with a MANPAD anti-aircraft missile, and Filipov, after parachuting to the ground, fought bravely to the end while surrounded by extremists. The coffin was then taken to the Alley of Glory cemetery for burial. His burial was held with full military honors, with his comrades holding up their guns and respectfully escorting him back to his homeland. In the memories of his former teachers, pilot Filipov was an excellent student with impressive grades. Coming from a military family, Filipov followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Russian Air Force. Both Filipov's mother and sister served in the Russian military. Filipov parachuted out of the downed plane but fell into enemy territory. He engaged in a gun battle with the extremists, losing both equipment and manpower and being seriously wounded. After being wounded and surrounded by the rebels, Filipov committed suicide with a hand grenade.
