"The Secretary of State for Europe, Sir Alan Duncan, condemned the opening of the bridge from Russia to Crimea and stressed the UK's concerns about the human rights situation in the peninsula," the British Foreign Office said in a statement.
"Crimea is Ukrainian territory, and Russia's annexation of the peninsula is a violation of international law. The opening of the bridge is a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and another example of Russia's reckless behavior. We continue to work with our partners to oppose the annexation, including by maintaining strict sanctions," the minister's statement stressed.
The bridge over the Kerch Strait connecting Crimea and the Krasnodar region is the longest bridge in Russia, its length is 19 km. The traffic on the bridge was originally scheduled for December 2018, but the builders completed the work ahead of schedule. The Crimean Bridge information center said on May 14 that the traffic section of the bridge across the Kerch Strait will begin on May 16.
