On September 12, a photo of a man riding a motorbike carrying a body wrapped in a mat with purple legs sticking out went viral on social media. The man’s name was Lo Van Muon, and he was carrying the body of his younger sister, Lo Thi Phanh, who died on her way home from the hospital.

According to Dr. Luong Van Tuan, Director of the Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital of Son La province, Ms. Phanh was admitted to the hospital on August 28 with a diagnosis of exhaustion on a suspected HIV infection. On September 12, Mr. Muon sent a request to the hospital leadership asking to take Phanh home. When she was discharged from the hospital, the doctor examined Ms. Phanh, her vital signs were normal and she was healthy. The brother said that on the way home, when he stopped to refuel, his sister had difficulty breathing, gradually fainted and died. He asked people to buy mats to wrap her body, put her on his motorbike and continued to take her home.

On the afternoon of September 15, representatives of Son La Tuberculosis and Lung Hospital visited the patient's home to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.According to hospital regulations, when a patient dies in the hospital, the body will be transferred to the mortuary. Normally, the burial is carried out by the patient's family. If the deceased has an infectious disease, the body must be disinfected and embalmed by the mortuary staff.
