A shocking photo of an Argentine girl kneeling in a puddle of water to quench her thirst during a 38-degree heatwave has sparked a public outcry. The incident occurred in Posadas, Misiones province, Argentina.

A local newspaper reporter took the photo and social activist Migue Ríos posted it on social media. The girl is believed to be from the impoverished Mbya Guarani community and begs alongside other children in the city of Posadas.

Rios captioned the photo: “This Guarani girl quenches her thirst from a puddle on the road. It seems we are not doing our part as members of society.”

He said the girl was taken to the doctor after drinking dirty water, but he still wanted to post the photo because he wanted to show people about the social problems that exist and that no one seems to pay enough attention to this issue.

"ReporterMissions Onlinedrove past Mitre Avenue and saw this scene as he stopped at a red light. Sadly, this is a common scene in the Posadas center. Children from the Guarani community are often exploited by adults to beg in the city,” the newspaper said.

Journalists and reporters tried their best to help these children, by bringing bottles of water and distributing them to the poor children. The newspaper also said that officials periodically launched campaigns to bring these children back to the community, but after a short time, they were again exploited to beg on the streets.

The Guarani community is an indigenous group of people who follow traditional South American culture. They speak the Guarani language as their language of communication and live in Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. There are currently about 3,000 Guarani people living in the Misiones province.
